Child Behaviour Reflection Tool

Children’s behaviour is often a form of communication. When a child refuses, melts down, shuts down, or argues, it usually means something in the situation is hard for them — not simply that they are being “difficult.” This reflection tool helps you look at patterns around behaviour: what you are seeing, when it tends to happen, and what might be making it harder. Based on your selections, the tool suggests common underlying drivers and practical strategies that many families find helpful. The goal is not to label or judge behaviour, but to help you better understand what your child may need and where you can start making things easier.

What Might Be Driving Behaviour?

Select what you’re seeing, when it tends to happen, and what makes it worse. You’ll get a practical support plan to try at home.

Educational reflection tool (non-diagnostic). It suggests everyday support strategies and does not assess, label, or diagnose any condition.

How to use the ideas from this tool

The suggestions above are starting points, not rules. Every child and family is different, and what works in one situation may need adjusting in another. You may find it helpful to try one or two strategies consistently for a week or two before deciding whether they are helping. Small changes to routines, expectations, or the environment can often make a surprisingly big difference.

Important note

This reflection tool is an educational resource designed to support parents in thinking about behaviour patterns and practical ways to respond. It does not diagnose, assess, or label any medical, developmental, or mental health condition, and it should not be used as a substitute for professional advice. If you are concerned about your child’s safety, wellbeing, or development, or if behaviour is causing significant stress at home or school, speaking with a qualified professional may be helpful.
